As a National Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) chapter regent, I've been able to get a bird's eye view of the many ways our chapter is a "force for good" in our community-a soothing thing to see in unsettling times.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has three primary mission areas: Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism. Our Gettysburg chapter has had a lot of fun diving deeper into historic preservation this year. We held a National Day of Service at the National Apple Museum that grew into many volunteer sessions to continue the work of the museum and the Biglerville Historical and Preservation that runs it. We sponsored an historic preservation grant for a nearby pre-revolutionary stone chapel https://youtu.be/j-H3sswyxD0 and got the word out about an amazing historic mill with a podcast and video: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1266335/6072820
DAR's focus on education comes naturally as many of our members are teachers. You may have read in our last blog post that our chapter reaches out to our local homeschooling community with DAR educational resources for lesson plans https://www.dar.org/national-society/education/dar-educational-resources and scholarships https://www.dar.org/national-society/scholarships We also work with local public and private schools through our history contests and Good Citizenship Award. I have been delighted quite a few times by stories from adults I meet who were honored to receive the DAR Good Citizenship Award as high school seniors.
Of course our chapter enjoys being patriotic. When you find out that your ancestor aided the cause of American independence you naturally ask what you can do now to help America. We march in Memorial Day parades, help immigrants prepare for their naturalization tests and interviews, we honor our veterans with an annual luncheon, and send care packages to active service members.
Besides being a place where we come together (in-person and virtually) for fun and support, our chapter is a great place to do good!
