About

We are a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women's service organization dedicated to preserving American history, securing America's future through better education, and promoting patriotism. Our chapter was established in November 1904 and throughout the years has established awards for local students; supported Camp Colt (the army's first tank school) and patriotic activities during World War I including support of the French town of Tilloloy for reconstruction; and during World War II, chapter members sold war bonds. In 1930 the chapter helped with the establishment of the Marsh Creek Society Children of the American Revolution. We have participated in the celebration of the 75th, 100th and the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and the 150th, 175th and the 200th Anniversary of Adams County and of the town of Gettysburg.

We have a veteran and active service outreach mission including visits to local nursing homes, sending care packages, and honoring our local veterans. Additionally the chapter participates in local naturalization, Constitution Day, and Memorial Day ceremonies. From its inception, the Gettysburg Chapter, NSDAR has had as its primary interest, the furtherance of historical awareness, especially in area youth. Currently, the chapter honors three of its former officers through awards to local students. These awards are the Elsie B. Wolf Essays Award, the Elizabeth S. Hennig American History Award, the Marion “Peg” Scharf American Citizenship Award. An ROTC medal is presented annually to an outstanding Junior ROTC cadet as well.

We are dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.
