As The Gettysburg Chapter, NSDAR, begins our National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) year of events, we pause to reflect on these last six months. While we gathered in early March for our annual student awards luncheon, my Good Citizenship Award chairperson ran in to apologize that she could not congratulate her award winners herself as planned because, as her charter school’s principle and superintendent, she would that day be working out how her teachers would take their classes online for that next week.
We too scrambled to continue our good work in the community while keeping everyone safe and connected. We held a zoom meeting that taught folks how to protect their family historic treasures and archives. We met online for our annual book-club meeting. We called all 96 chapter members to check so that they would feel encouraged as we fought this epidemic together. Finally by June we were able to meet outside with masks for our annual picnic that served as a closure for our year-long service project to the National Apple Museum in Biglerville, PA.
I have been delighted that our chapter has continued to benefit the community through these events and our individual service that gets entered on the Daughters of the American Revolution Service to America Tally: https://www.dar.org/national-society/service-america
Seeing these volunteer hours climb ever higher as our year progresses, clarifies to me just how many good things are accomplished in our country through kind-hearted volunteer service. It seems to be what holds us all together.
As we go forward together during this challenging time, it is comforting to know that there are many "forces for good," and that our chapter can humbly be one of them!
