On October 10th, a number of our chapter members gathered at the edge of the town to face, not incoming Confederate soldiers as some of our ancestors did in 1863, but stray bits of ugly litter by the side of Route 34. It was a beautiful day, and we dressed in layers to be comfortable during the next two hours. We knew the weather could be unpredictable; our Conservation Chair, Karen Neiderer, had registered our chapter with the PA Department of Transportation to clean a two-mile stretch of Carlisle Road from the edge of town to the Supergrit Abrasives Company each spring and fall.
Karen had all that we needed to safely contribute to NSDAR’s National Day of Service, October 10. We donned orange vests and gloves while picking up our trash bag and pick-up tool and headed north. We enjoyed catching up and getting to know each other as we made our roadsides lovely. When chapter members drive this stretch of road you can feel proud that our chapter regularly improve not only the view, but also a sense of care in the community.
As we headed back to our starting point we met a mason working on the historical culvert walls at the edge of the battlefield. He said his service happens in all kinds of weather; we celebrated together that things were improved on such a beautiful sunny day. Each chapter member enjoys service that is best for them to give. Next spring consider this unique contribution to beautify our county. Of course, don’t forget to enter any of your service hours, DAR-related or not, on the NSDAR Service to America Tally!
